With unique distinctions, as well as similarities in both populations and needs, each County offers a wealth of options for all walks of life and all stages of need. The following organizations specialize in supporting specifically those 55 and over who reside in either The Villages or Sumter County communities. Each with their own focus, these organizations receive support from United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties.
Caring Neighbors
Caring Neighbors is an organized network of volunteers who proactively respond to the needs of their neighbors with their own Village within The Villages. Their work is focused on those neighbors who are facing life challenges or family crises. Their services include FREE, practical, common sense, non-medical assistance such as: transportation, respite care, friendly home visits, short-term meals, pet care and errand running.
The goal of Caring Neighbors is have a program in each Village and they are steadily growing. If you are interested in adding your Village to this program OR have a neighbor who is in need within the Villages of Hadley and Summerhill, or soon-to-be Buttonwood, Fenney, and Sunset Pointe, please Contact Anne Bosler at (352) 674-9022 or via EMAIL. If you wish to volunteer with Caring Neighbors, please contact Anne Bosler, as well. If you do not see your Village listed, perhaps you would be interested in helping to start a group. Guidance and all materials necessary will be provided.
Pickleballers Serving Seniors
While Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and there are more than a few courts in the Villages, this group came together for love of the sport AND love of helping each other. Their story begins… While the 2020 pandemic will be remembered for creating world turmoil and much grief, it also was the impetus for the birth of Pickleballers Serving Seniors (PSS). It was during the pandemic that a small group of pickleball players in The Villages were counting their blessings while discussing how incredibly blessed we were to live in such a beautiful community and be able to play the sport we love with our pickleball family.
The discussion turned to how others weren’t as fortunate in our community. Living in a 55-plus community, we talked about how there were many neighbors dealing with health issues who have lost their mobility or simply could use a helping hand at times to pick up groceries and prescriptions, could use a spiritual ear to chat, assistance with technology or possibly minor handyman chores around the house such as a widow with a broken sprinkler or perhaps a widower needing assistance to make funeral arrangements.
Picklballers Serving Seniors offer a variety of services and more information may be found on their website. If you are interested in volunteering your services in assisting fellow Villagers and are a Pickleballer, click here to send them an email and share your interests.
