Volunteers came together on Wednesday to distribute thousands of pounds of food to families in need before Thanksgiving.

The second annual Thanks-Give-Away was organized by United Way of Lake and Sumter counties, which partnered with Lake Sumter State College, Lake Cares and Second Harvest of Central Florida.

Hundreds of cars lined up hours before the drive-thru event in Leesburg.

“There is still a lack of people having jobs and having regular income for a plethora of reasons,” United Way of Lake and Sumter CEO Monica Wofford said. “Pandemic or no pandemic, there is still a significant need in Lake and Sumter County.”

The event came as the organizations have had to overcome supply chain issues to give away more than 10,500 pounds of food.
